Latrobe school officials say high school secretary died of COVID-19 complications

LATROBE, Pa. — In an email sent out to faculty and staff members on Thanksgiving Day, the Latrobe superintendent said a high school secretary died of COVID-19 complications.

According to Superintendent Georgia Teppert, Terri Sherwin “was a wonderful employee who will be missed by the entire Greater Latrobe School District family.” Tepper described Sherwin as generous, kind and that kids loved working with her.

School officials said grief counselors will be available for staff members who wanted to talk.

“The people dying aren’t mere numbers. They are our fathers and mothers, grandparents, brothers, sisters and children,” Dr. Debra Bogen said.

Bogen is the director of the Allegheny County Health Department. She, along with County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, said many more families are going to experience grief and heartbreak.

“We see hospitalizations that have gone up. And in some places, they literally can’t handle the capacity right now,” Fitzgerald said.

Health officials are pleading with families to stay home and lessen the burden on the health care system.

Sherwin marks the second school employee who has reportedly died recently from COVID-19 complications.
