Long-time Pittsburgh activist given key to the city by Mayor Peduto

PITTSBURGH — A long-time activist and iconic Pittsburgh leader was honored by Mayor Bill Peduto on Tuesday.

Alma Fox was presented with a key to the city. This is the fourth time Mayor Peduto was recognized someone with the key to the city, and the first time it was awarded to a woman.

Fox served on the Pittsburgh Commission on Human Relations for 32 years.

She was an advocate for civil rights and “gay and transgender activism,” and she says she has big plans for her new key to the city.

“I’m going to use my key to open wide whatever door there is to help me get voters to the polls on Tuesday,” Fox said.

Fox also served as the executive director of the NAACP for more than 50 years.

At age 95, she remains politically active today.
