Mayor says FBI investigating ‘white-collar crimes’ after agents raid Ellwood City Medical Center

ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. — Dozens of FBI agents raided the now-closed Ellwood City Medical Center Thursday, carrying out box after box of evidence.

Ellwood City Mayor Anthony Court said the FBI was investigating alleged white-collar crimes.

“About 20 agents were here yesterday and carried out boxes and boxes of material from the medical center,” he said.

AmeriCorps Health, a for-profit corporation, filed for bankruptcy last month after taking control of the medical center in 2017. Shortly after the takeover, the facility started having issues, including layoffs, payroll problems, an emergency closure by the health department and more.

The mayor believes this is why the FBI is now involved.

“I think it’s another step in the right direction for our community and our citizens to try to get our hospital and medical center back to where it once was," he said.

Channel 11 reached out to the FBI. An agency spokesperson would only say the bureau was conducting law enforcement activity at the old hospital.
