Nixing Wilkinsburg annexation? Pittsburgh City Council introduces plan to dismiss proposal.

PITTSBURGH — A bill was introduced Tuesday that would deny a proposal for the City of Pittsburgh to annex Wilkinsburg.

According to our partners at TribLIVE.com, Council President Theresa Kail-Smith introduced the legislation that would end the controversial proposal.

If the council approved the annexation plan, it would have put the measure to a vote with a ballot referendum in Wilkinsburg.

Kail-Smith said she felt the council didn’t have enough information to get behind the annexation. She said there were too many unanswered questions over merging school districts, vacant property in Wilkinsburg and financial issues.

This move comes after the Wilkinsburg Community Development Corp. gathered petition signatures over the fall in favor of annexation.
