Officials: STD case numbers ‘astounding’ among parts of Allegheny County population

PITTSBURGH — County health officials said the numbers are astounding when it comes to cases of certain sexually transmitted diseases among parts of Allegheny County’s population. They stress getting tested has never been more vital.

“There was a 97% rise in symptomatic syphilis in Allegheny County and there was an 18% rise in gonorrhea cases as well,” said Valerie Stallworth, a program manager for the Allegheny County Health Department.

Stallworth and other county leaders are making walk-in clinics more accessible to people in places like the Hill District to help combat those numbers.
