STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Officials at Penn State University report the omicron variant has been detected at the main campus in State College.
The university has been testing for the variant while keeping an eye on its spread.
University officials plan to update students, parents and families about whether or not the upcoming spring semester will start remotely on Dec. 30.
The main campus is home to 46,000 undergraduate students according to Penn State’s website. The university’s winter break started this past weekend as finals and classes ended on Friday.
The news out of State College comes just as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention named the omicron variant the new dominant strain in the United States.
