Pittsburgh food bank trying hard to keep up with skyrocketing demand

PITTSBURGH — With the critical demand for food amid the COVID-19 pandemic, officials with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank are doing the best they can but admit they’re running low on resources.

Even after bringing food to more than 5,000 cars over the last couple food giveaways, workers still had to turn people away.

Lisa Scales, president and CEO of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, said they have seen a fivefold increase in the number of people in need of food.

“I expect that we will still have food to provide. What I don’t know is will we have enough food to provide,” Scales said.

Scales said the food bank has reached out to manufacturers and is asking for support from the federal government.
