Police arrest man in connection with South Side Slopes fatal shooting

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police arrested a South Side Slopes man in connection with a fatal shooting in that neighborhood on Thursday morning.

Louis Dickerson, 42, is charged with homicide and other charges, according to a police news release.

Dickerson was drinking and playing cards with Omar Berry, 43, at his home on Mission Street when they got into an argument and Dickerson shot Berry.

Dickerson told police that Berry kept talking about money and thought Berry reached for a gun, so he shot him. He said “he didn’t want to kill the victim and that he only wanted to get him out of his apartment,” according to a criminal complaint.

Police responded to the home at 5:09 a.m. after Dickerson called 911. Officers found Berry on the second floor of the home with a gunshot wound and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Dickerson, who initially told police that people he didn’t know shot Berry from outside the home, is charged with homicide and tampering with evidence.

“The bullet recovered contradicted the statement provided by Mr. Dickerson as to the pathway of the gunfire and led investigators to believe the bullet had been fired from inside Dickerson's apartment,” the complaint said.

Dickerson later admitted to shooting Berry. Police said Dickerson hid the gun, which was found near a memorial outside his home.
