PITTSBURGH — A lot of people who live and work in the Strip District tell Channel 11 that the intersection of 25th Street and Penn Avenue is very dangerous and it’s now becoming a major problem.
Rob Willis, who lives in the strip, said since private construction started on 24th Street he’s seen constant car wrecks at the intersection of 25th and Penn.
“We live where we can see this intersection out our window and we will hear a long bang. It’s been once a week for the last month or two, I’m guessing from the detour,” he said. “When I drive through it, when I have to cross it, it’s a little bit of a ‘Jesus take the wheel’ moment and we definitely see the impact of folks running into each other.”
He said speeding and visibility have also been a factor. Some drivers are going too fast and with all the cars parked on Penn it’s tough to see down the busy street.
“I can never see, like I pretty much have to pull out into the middle of the road to tell if cars are coming, I kind of rely on their headlights, Rhianna Beaver, who works in the Strip District, said.
And with more local businesses and apartments popping up there’s a lot more traffic on Smallman street as well.
“It’s also nerve wracking because you also have to look for pedestrians so you’re just like all over the place,” Beaver said.
The city responded to complaints by sending out a traffic reviewer to look at the issues and more police will be patrolling the area to catch any drivers speeding.
