‘Who did she ever hurt?’ Local mother devastated after 3-year-old shot to death at babysitter’s house

PITTSBURGH — The mother of a 3-year-old girl who was shot and killed in Beltzhoover is sharing her heartbreaking story.

ORIGINAL STORY: 3-year-old girl shot, killed in bed; man arrested

Chassity Clancy was found dead in her bed from a gunshot wound early Sunday morning. Her mother, Chantell Brooks, was on vacation when the deadly shooting happened – Clancy was at the babysitter’s house.

Brooks came back early to find out her daughter was killed.

“I mean, she’s three. Who would ever think that you get a call saying a 3-year-old was murdered? Who did she ever hurt?” Brooks said. “I trusted these people. She was there all the time -- I paid for services, sent food.”

Brooks said Marlin Pitchard is the babysitter’s husband. He told investigators he slept with a gun because he thought people were after him.

Pitchard said all he remembers the night Clancy died is waking up to a loud sound. He is being charged with homicide.

“It’s just sad that people gain your trust and betray you, that’s how I feel ... like really betrayed,” Brooks said. “She was so smart, so full of life. I don’t know why someone would hurt her.”

Clancy’s family set up a GoFundMe to help pay for funeral costs and other expenses. You can find more on that here.

Her funeral will be held Monday, according to Brooks.
