Madonna’s MTV ‘Moonman’ statuette from 1987 up for sale

BOSTON — Madonna has made up her mind. She is not keeping her statuette.

The MTV Video Music Award “Moonman” statuette given to the Material Girl in 1987 for “Papa Don’t Preach” is now on the block, Boston-based RR Auction said. Bidding ends on Wednesday.

The auction house’s website said that the statuette belonged to a “high-ranking member” of Madonna’s management team. It is accompanied by a notarized letter of provenance, RR Auction said in its auction listing.

Fifteen people have already bid on the award, which features the Moonman character that was used in MTV breaks at the top of the hour when the music video channel began and then flourished during the 1980s.

“Papa Don’t Preach” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on June 28, 1986, and spent 18 weeks on the charts. The song peaked at No. 1 on Aug. 16, 1986, and stayed atop the charts for two weeks.

The song was Madonna’s fourth No. 1 hit, according to Billboard.

Papa Don’t Preach” also received two other VMA nominations. along with a Grammy Award nomination for best pop vocal performance by a female.
