The body of Nevaeh Jade Newswanger was recovered early Monday morning after her family called 911 at approximately 5:50 p.m. Sunday, WYFF reported. According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Newswanger was swept away by water at the top of the waterfall and the current carried her over the falls.

According to Jackson County officials, Whitewater Falls, at 411 feet, is one of the highest waterfalls east of the Rockies.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office told WYFF that the girl’s family is from Pennsylvania but had been living in the Oconee County area recently for work purposes.

In a statement, Jackson County Sheriff Chip Hall offered condolences to the family and reminded visitors to “Always remain at a distance, follow safety precautions and warnings which are in place, and view waterfalls from designated viewing areas,” WSPA reported.
