“In recent days, my wife and I finalized our divorce from one another after 13 years of marriage,” Brady said in a post on Instagram. “We arrived at this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together.”

Citing an unidentified source, CNN reported that the couple will mutually petition on Friday for a dissolution of their marriage in Florida. Sources told TMZ that the pair had been recently working with a mediator to determine how to split their property and custody of their children.

“We arrived at this decision to end our marriage after much consideration,” Brady said Friday. “Doing so is, of course, painful and difficult, like it is for many people who go through the same thing every day around the world. However we wish only the best for each other as we pursue whatever new chapters in our lives that are yet to be written.”

Reports surfaced months earlier indicating problems in the couple’s marriage following Brady’s brief retirement from the NFL and return in March. In September, Bündchen told Elle magazine that she had her concerns about Brady’s return to the field.

“This is a very violent sport, and I have my children and I would like him to be more present,” she said, according to Elle. “I have definitely had those conversations with him over and over again. But ultimately, I feel that everybody has to make a decision that works for (them). He needs to follow his joy, too.”

The couple share two children — 12-year-old Benjamin and 9-year-old Vivian — and 15-year-old John Edward, Brady’s son from his previous relationship with Bridget Moynahan, according to People.

“We are blessed with beautiful and wonderful children who continue to be the center of our world in every way,” Brady said Friday. “We will continue to work together as parents to always ensure they receive the love and attention they deserve.”
