Woman chasing escaped dogs on Florida interstate killed by vehicle

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Florida — A Florida woman was fatally struck by a van Saturday while chasing her dogs, who had escaped from her vehicle, on an interstate highway, authorities said.

According to Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson Lt. Kim Montes, at about 6:10 a.m. EDT the 40-year-old woman from Mims had stopped on the right shoulder of the southbound lane of Interstate 95 near Edgewater in Volusia County, WTVT reported.

The woman intended to switch places with her passenger because she was tired, the FHP said. While switching places, two dogs in the vehicle escaped and ran onto the highway, WFLA-TV reported. The woman chased the animals across traffic and was fatally struck by a van, according to the television station.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, WTVT reported.

The driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old man from Orange City, was not injured, Montes said.

The dogs were not injured and were later caught and returned to the vehicle, the FHP said.

The crash remains under investigation, according to WTVT.
