The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office arrested Bracey Renee Byrd on charges of attempted murder, felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury, malicious castration, kidnapping and felony child abuse with physical injury, WNCT reported. Byrd is the stepmother of the alleged victim.

The Wilson County Department of Social Services referred the case to detectives after the victim was brought to a hospital with third-degree burns, WITN reported. Hospital staff told officials that the injuries did not seem to be self-inflicted, and there were other injuries to the child’s body.

Officials said the child, whose age was not released, had injuries and bruising to the face, head, arms, upper and lower legs, back and genital area, WNCT reported. Some of the injuries did not appear current and were in the process of healing.

A magistrate ordered Byrd to be held on a $2 million secured bond, WITN reported.
