Man facing charges after hit-and-run DUI crash in Baldwin Borough

BALDWIN BOROUGH, Pa. — Baldwin Borough Police are filing criminal charges against a 53-year-old man who they say is responsible for a hit and run DUI crash that caused $150,000 in damage to a home and left a young couple and their 19-month-old foster son displaced.

According to the criminal complaint, Michael Deery was actively trying to flee and was eventually pulled over by police several houses down from the Churchview Avenue crash site.

“Your actions when you chose to get behind the wheel when you’re drinking and what you did—you affected everybody,” said Maria Neumeyer, of Baldwin.

Maria Neumeyer, Dana DiDolce and their foster son were sound asleep upstairs when the car smashed into the back of their property just after 2 a.m. on Jan. 16.

Police paperwork states Deery admitted to leaving the Backdraft bar on the same road less than half a mile away before he “blacked out.”

During questioning, police spotted beer cans scattered throughout the back passenger compartment of the car.

He was taken to UPMC Mercy for Treatment and completed a blood draw.

“It makes me mad to think like he left, and we could’ve been hurt. Like, my son maybe he couldn’t sleep or I had him downstairs or something like that,” said Neumeyer.

The impact of the crash was so bad emergency responders had to rescue the young family from the upstairs since their stairwell collapsed.

Channel 11 went to Deery’s Hazelhurst Avenue home for his side of the story.

A woman opened the window and told us:

“We actually don’t want to be on the news. Thank you.”

Tonight, Neumeyer is left wondering:

“There was obviously people home and even if there wasn’t—why wouldn’t you just stay and just check to make sure you didn’t hurt anybody?!” said Neumeyer.

Deery is set to face a judge for his preliminary hearing March 8.

He is being charged via summons.

The victims are also calling for additional safety changes and some sort of guard rail to be installed behind their home, so a crash like this never happens again.
