Grace VanderWaal teases new music with Ingrid Michaelson

Grace VanderWaal is now on tour with Imagine Dragons, but you can expect to hear her collaborations with another major artist soon.

"Well, it depends on what your 'soon' is," the 14-year-old joked at the Grammy Museum Sunday, where she chatted with USA TODAY before performing for an intimate crowd as part of the museum's "spotlight" series. "'Grace soon' means pretty soon. But other people's 'soon' is ... not tomorrow."

In the near future, though, VanderWaal will be putting out a song with Ingrid Michaelson, "because I went to one of her concerts, and I really love her; I love her voice. We sang a song together."

As for other dream collaborators, VanderWaal said back when she won "America's Got Talent" in 2016 that she wanted to work with Jason Mraz. A year later, she did perform with him at the 2017 Special Olympics. But that wasn't all.

"We actually made a song together, too," VanderWaal revealed. "But we never did anything with it." VanderWaal even sang a line from their unreleased duet onstage: "Hello-o-o-o-oo!""

So what happened to the tune?

"I don’t know," VanderWaal laughed. "These things in this world of entertainment. So many things just disappear."

Another thing that disappeared: A bunch of songs that VanderWaal wrote. OK, well she purposely discarded those.

"I thought I finished a whole EP on tour," she said. "But I actually decided really recently that I hate all of my songs, so I’m starting over. ... Maybe I don’t have an EP anymore. But I’ll have something to release. I’m just so busy!"
