3rd person charged in fatal shooting of teen who chased intruders

BEN AVON, Pa. — Three people have now been charged in connection with the shooting death of an 18-year-old man in Ben Avon.

The shooting was reported just after midnight Friday on Spruce Run Road.

Investigators said officers found the victim, Kyle Stauber, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to a hospital, where he died. The medical examiner Friday afternoon ruled Stauber's death a homicide.

Police identified the shooting suspect as 19-year-old Gregg Scholze of West View. He was charged Friday evening with criminal homicide, robbery, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person in connection with Stauber’s death.

When asked about his involvement, Scholze said, “I got set up.”

Authorities said hours later that they also arrested the suspected getaway driver, Kayla Naper, who is Scholze‘s girlfriend. She faces charges of criminal homicide, robbery and criminal conspiracy.

Authorities announced Monday that they arrested and charged a third person, 25-year-old John Pignanelli.

Pignanelli was lodged at the Allegheny County Jail to await arraignment on charges of homicide and conspiracy to commit robbery.

Police said Stauber was the target of a home invasion and was shot when he tried to chase the intruders.

Naper told police the whole incident started over a $300 bong that was stolen from her about a month ago. Schloze allegedly received a Snapchat screen shot of the bong.

Naper told police Schloze knew where it was located and told her they were going to Stauber’s home to recover it.

According to the criminal complaint, Naper drove her silver Nissan Sentra because she and Schloze decided "it looked less shady" than Schloze's car and picked up two other men. Police said Schloze and the two men went into Stauber’s home, while Naper stayed outside with the Sentra.

Witnesses inside the home with Stauber at the time of the robbery told police that Schloze and the men stole a video game system, cellphones and cigarettes. Witnesses told police that Scholze was armed with a gun.

After the suspects exited the house, a woman from inside came out with a kitchen knife, and the suspects fired a shot in her direction, the complaint said. Everyone inside the home took cover, while Stauber grabbed a baseball bat.

The complaint stated that Naper told police she heard screaming and saw Schloze and the two other men frantically come running back to the car, as well as someone chasing after them with a baseball bat.

Naper said she heard a “loud bang,” and saw the person with the baseball bat fall to the ground.

One witness told officers that “she heard glass break and then two gunshots,” the police report said. The suspects then got in a car and left, the witnesses said.

Authorities said at least one of the bullets hit Stauber, who identified Scholze as his shooter before he was taken to a hospital, according to the complaint. Stauber died an hour later.

Channel 11 News spoke with Stauber’s grandmother, Toni Stauber, by phone Friday. She said this is the second death in her family in less than a year. Stauber’s father, Eric Stauber, was killed in May after he was hit by a car being driven by an off-duty officer in Florida.

“He was riding a two-wheel bike and he hit the curb and fell into the street and an off-duty officer ran over his head,” Toni Stauber said. “That was the worse day of my life and this just ties in with it.”

As of Friday night, authorities were still working to identify the other two men involved in the robbery.
