Accused DUI driver who struck 6-year-old girl released on electronic monitoring

SHALER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The man charged in association with a DUI crash that killed a 6-year-old girl in Shaler was released on electronic monitoring Monday afternoon.

Travis Grayson, who was 20 at the time of the accident, is accused of driving under the influence when he allegedly struck 6-year-old Ava Campbell in Shaler.

Witnesses told police that Grayson’s vehicle went off the road, striking the girl and her mother who were standing in a driveway with a second child.

Campbell was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead following the accident. Her mother refused medical treatment.%

A criminal complaint said Grayson told police that he had consumed at least 10 beers before the accident, adding that he drank the first two while his mother was home.

Grayson also told officers that he smoked a bowl of marijuana earlier in the day, according to the criminal complaint.

Grayson was charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, third-degree murder, aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, three counts of recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving and careless driving.

According to the district attorney, Grayson was driving 85 miles per hour at the time of the accident.

Grayson will be released to his parents under the electronic monitoring. His trial is set to begin next month.
