PITTSBURGH — The Allegheny Building in downtown Pittsburgh reopened Wednesday after a fire late last month at the former Macy’s building adjacent to it revealed code enforcement violations.
The July 30 fire knocked out power to the 19-story Allegheny Building on Forbes Avenue, forcing people to evacuate. The building’s doors were padlocked three days later because of code violations, including the need to separate electricity that was shared with the Macy’s building.
On Monday, the building -- which houses Apollo Cafe, Allegheny court offices, a Zipcar franchise and law offices -- passed inspection.
Tina Hammerling, owner of Apollo Cafe, is glad to be able to get back to work after the month-long closure.
“It was out of our control, it was out of the building's control, so we had to deal with it as best we could,” she said.
With the Labor Day weekend coming up, Hammerling said that it could be a week or two before business returns to normal at the cafe.
“We just need to get the word out this week. We are open again, and hopefully I didn't lose my business,” she said.
