Parents fear new elementary school won't be ready for new year

MONTOUR, Pa. — A school that's supposed to be ready for Montour area students in a couple of weeks, parents are concerned won't be ready in time.

“It's really cool, I'm going to a big school. It's bigger than Forest Grove!” said incoming first-grader Bailey Thornburg, who got to see inside her new school for the first time Tuesday.

The sprawling school is scheduled to be ready for students in two weeks.

While impressed, parents like Bailey’s mom Sara say a lot of work remains.

TRENDING NOW:

“I'm surprised. There's a lot inside, but there's a lot of people working in there as we toured it during orientation today,” Sara Thornburg said.

The $50 million kindergarten through fourth-grade school is replacing Burkett Elementary, which was sold to the Propel Charter School System and Forest Grove Elementary, which is currently for sale.

“That makes you shiver a little bit,” said parent Heidi Schroeder. “That's a lot of money.”

Channel 11 took those concerns to superintendent Chris Stone, who fully expects the school to be ready for the first day of school.

In a statement to Channel 11, he said in part: "This state of the art elementary school will be like no other in the region. Although the structure is beautiful, the learning opportunities within the building are what will make it so special."

Sara Thornburg is excited to see how the school turns out and she's relatively confident it will be finished by the time school starts.

“I'm like 85 percent confident it will be accomplished,” she said. “Maybe not the playground or the outside, but hopefully the inside and the teachers will have all of their rooms set up.”

Forest Grove Elementary is getting a second appraisal to determine its value.

Stone says the school board will likely attach an asking price for the building next month.
