Item found by 3-year-old in Monaca identified as pipe bomb

MONACA, Pa. — The suspicious item found Monday by a 3-year-old girl at a Monaca apartment complex was a pipe bomb, police said.

According to police, the girl was playing near her Spring Run Apartments unit about 11 a.m. when she found the explosive device.

Kyra Monac took the bomb inside and showed it to her father, Tony Monac, who said he immediately threw the item outside and called police.

“I didn’t know what it was. I was just worried about my little girl,” he said.

The bomb squad responded and part of the apartment complex was evacuated.

The device was described as a round device, about 8 inches, covered in duct tape with wires and a fuse.

Bomb squad officials said the bomb was detonated.

No injuries were reported and everyone was allowed back into their apartments by 1 p.m.
