Pennsylvania’s unemployment claims reached more than 50,000 last week despite reopening plans

PITTSBURGH — An estimated 50,462 unemployment claims were filed in Pennsylvania last week, down more than 16,000 claims or 24% from the revised total of just under 67,000 claims from the week before according to the latest report from the U.S. Department of Labor. While claims overall mostly continue to fall week-over-week, the total number of claims continues to mount at unprecedented levels despite plans for many businesses throughout the commonwealth to reopen.

Pittsburgh’s Rivers Casino and the Meadows Casino in Washington announced plans to reopen their facilities on June 9 but with new safe guards in place as the region transitions to the green phase of state-wide mitigation efforts. Some of Pittsburgh’s law firms explained just what this new phase might look like for their offices downtown.
