Sharp Edge owner on closing downtown restaurant: ‘I was very lucky, to say the least’

PITTSBURGH — When it came time for him to decide on whether to close Sharp Edge Bistro downtown, Jeff Walewski turned to the cold contractual logic of the calendar to lead the way.

“Downtown was kind of a shock,” said Walewski, of the hit his Penn Avenue restaurant faced when Covid-19 pandemic hit.

On June 30, he faced the end of his 10-year lease on the 5,600-square-foot restaurant at 922 Penn Ave., leaving him with the contractual option to extend the term there for another five years.

As he faced state shutdowns, capacity restrictions and the overall deterioration of the business climate downtown, Walewski saw a no-brainer decision to close.
