Viatris to lay off up to 20% of global workforce, with local impacts expected to occur

CANONSBURG, Pa. — Viatris, the global pharmaceutical company based at Southpointe that used to be known as Mylan NV, announced Friday it will be laying off up to 20% of its workforce globally and making cuts at its manufacturing facility in nearby Morgantown, West Virginia.

Viatris (Nasdaq: VTRS) has about 45,000 employees. The layoffs would total 9,000 if fully implemented.

This builds upon the company’s restructuring announced after the November merger of Mylan and Upjohn. The Southpointe office wasn’t specifically mentioned, but of the five sites that were are the oral solid dose manufacturing plant in Morgantown, as well as sites in Ireland, Puerto Rico and India marked for initial impact. There will be 15 in all between the former Mylan and former Upjohn sites. There was no time line for the cuts other than that they will happen within the next several years.
