Candy-Striped Orchid Named In Memory Of Frank Sarris

PITTSBURGH,None — Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens announced Friday that it named a candy-striped orchid hybrid in memory of the late founder and owner of Sarris Candies.

Frank Sarris passed away on March 1, 2010. He was a trustee and benefactor of Phipps

Phipps dedicated its Spring Flower Show and most recently, an extraordinary new breed of candy-striped orchid to Sarris.

Phalaenopsis 'Frank Sarris' a neon pink orchid with red and pink candy stripes, is a hybrid of the Phalaenopsis peppermint and the Phalaenopsis Ai Energy orchids.

Phipps Executive Director Richard Piacentini said he chose this particular orchid, bred by Dick Wells at Hilltop Orchids, because of its unique beauty and candy stripe feature.

"The orchid is the world's most popular flower," said Piacentini. "It is fitting to dedicate this stunning candy-striped Phalaenopsis orchid to Frank Sarris, whose love of Phipps and our community has made an impression that will remain with us always. This beautiful flower will grace our Orchid Room and will bring to mind the singular leadership and caring devotion of the man for whom it is named. We will miss this faithful trustee dearly."

The orchid is registered with its new name at the Royal Horticultural Society at Kew Garden in London. Phipps will display the Phalaenopsis 'Frank Sarris' orchid in its renowned Orchid Room at the Conservatory in Schenley Park.
