ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The driveway at a Ross Township man’s home is now partially filled with gravel after a water main break in late August, and the damage is mounting with repairs yet to be completed.
“There was a nice driveway. I had a nice flower garden, azalea bush, some flowers,” homeowner Dwight Guthrie said. “After I made the first call, I assumed it would be fixed within the month. It hasn't been that way at all.”
More than six weeks later, the only change in the front yard is more damage to the driveway that the water company partially ripped up. Other concrete slabs have since begun raising, a problem Guthrie said didn’t exist before the break.
Upon calling West View Water Authority, Guthrie said he was told that the additional damage is his responsibility. An estimate of what it would cost to make the repairs was about $8,800.
“Where's the money coming from? That's what's running through my mind. I've been retired since 1989,” Guthrie said.
An insurance claim that Guthrie filed with the water authority was denied last week. On Wednesday, Guthrie is scheduled to meet with a contractor to discuss the scope of the problem and hopes they can come up with a solution.
“All I'm asking is to just repair the damage. I would be extremely happy with that. I'm not looking for anything I'm not entitled to, all I'm asking is to please, please do what is right,” Guthrie said.
