District officials confirm case of MRSA at Springdale High School

SPRINGDALE, Pa. — The Allegheny Valley School District alerted parents Tuesday to a confirmed case of MRSA at Springdale High School.

In the letter, Superintendent Pat Graczyk said the district is working with its nursing staff on the treatment and prevention of MRSA, which is a type of staph infection, and that the school nurse is following up with the person who tested positive.

Graczyk said in the letter that hand sanitizing dispensers are available in all district buildings and common areas such as restrooms are disinfected daily.

The district did not disclose whether the individual is a student or an adult.

MRSA is caused by a type of staph bacteria that is resistant to many antibiotics. It is typically spread by skin-to-skin contact or contact with infected surfaces.
