Family holds annual softball tournament to honor siblings killed in shootings

HARRISON CITY, Pa. — In memory of their loved ones who were taken from them in two acts of violence, family members on Sunday continued their five-year tradition of holding a softball tournament at Penn Township Municipal Park.

Tragedy has struck the Schaab family twice. In March 2012, Mike Schaab was killed in the lobby of the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC in a random act of gun violence. His sister, Nancy, was fatally shot 16 months earlier in a domestic dispute.%

“They were two unique individuals who both enjoyed playing softball. They did it together and did it well,” the siblings’ mother, Mary Schaab, said.

To remember the siblings and their love of the game, family members organized an annual softball tournament in their memory.

This is a great way to get together in honor Mike and Nancy and give the family time to look forward to, everyone come together and remember them,” family friend Amanda Giacobbi said.

The tournament also makes a difference for others. To date, the event has raised nearly $100,000, with the profits going to various local charities and people in need.

We try to do good with it and pay it forward. And that's what my son was, a pay-it-forward type of person,” Mary Schaab said.

Organizers told Channel 11 News that they hope to keep the tournament going and have plans in the making for next year. For more details about the annual Schaab Memorial Softball Tournament,
