LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA — Some farmers in Pennsylvania are using a unique machine to help pick fruits and vegetables. You could say they're lying down on the job.
Plum Creek Farm at the Grove is trying out what they call the PA 1600. The equipment is from a company outside Lancaster called Crop Care. It allows the operatory to lay down while picking strawberries. The farm has been testing it and so far they love it. It saves them a lot of manual labor and bending down and up repeatedly.
The PA1600 has speed control and tires made for muddy fields, allowing the farmers to pick even faster than before. It even has a canopy so the operator is sheltered from the sun. The canopy doubles as a solar panel, allowing the machine to recharge as it goes.
The crop picker costs less than 4000 dollars.
