PITTSBURGH,None — The Fort Pitt Museum, part of the Sen. John Heinz History Center museum system, has been temporarily closed since Jan. 4 for exhibition maintenance and updating. The museum will reopen to the public Jan. 16.
"The temporary closure allowed us to improve the visitor experience and upgrade exhibitions as we look forward to a robust 2012," said Alan Gutchess, director of the Fort Pitt Museum.
Located at the birthplace of Pittsburgh in historic Point State Park, the Fort Pitt Museum is planning a full schedule of events for 2012, including several "Summer Saturdays Living History" programs which will feature re-enactors and educational programming.
The "Summer Saturdays Living History" series will kick off May 12 with a special program that will focus on the role of women during the 18th century. Activities will include cooking and laundry demonstrations, a fashion show, and much more.
Additional programs throughout the summer will focus on topics such as the role of children, food, and the arts in the development of Fort Pitt.
The museum currently features The American Frontier Rifleman: Tall Tales & Truth exhibition, which explores 200 years of this American legend through rare artifacts, lifelike museum figures and displays on American rifleman in popular culture. The exhibit will remain open through April 30.
