FREEPORT, Pa. — Freeport Area High School football players took the time to show their appreciation to police departments for protecting the communities they serve.
Players, coaches and boosters took cookies and gift cards to the Buffalo Township, Freeport and South Buffalo Township police departments, as well as the state police barracks in Kittanning.
“You don't have to bring us anything. We're here to do our job. If you call, we're going to show up. But I really appreciate it,” Buffalo Township Lt. Tim Derringer said.
Derringer said he was shocked by the gesture from players, like offensive tackle Matt Charleton, a junior who has taken part in other community service projects with his teammates.
“They protect our community every day, and they don’t get enough attention for that, we believe. It’s just nice to give them a little something to show our support,” Charleton said.
Freeport patrolman Dave Antal was glad to see the show of support for law enforcement.
“It's excellent. Not too many people would do something like this, especially in today's world. It's a really great thing they're doing. I really appreciate it,” Antal said.
The players said it was the least they could do for the people who serve their communities and support them on and off the field.
