Local Verizon Outage Possibly Linked To Strike

LEMONT FURNACE, Pa.,None — State police near Uniontown are investigating a 29-hour loss of land line phone service caused when someone entered a locked Verizon underground vault and shut off the power.

Trooper Timothy Kirsch said there was no forced entry, so police believe whoever shut of the power in Lemont Furnace, about 35 miles south of Pittsburgh, had keys. That's one reason Kirsch said police are attempting to determine if the incident which began about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday is related to a strike by Verizon land line workers.

The state police barracks in the rural hamlet was without phone and computer service for 21 hours due to the incident. Calls had to be forwarded to dispatchers who worked out of another barracks several miles away.

Police have no suspects and have made no arrests.
