Pittsburgh man in custody after attempted carjacking of police officer in Braddock

BRADDOCK, Pa. — A Pittsburgh man is in custody after an attempted carjacking of a police officer in Braddock on Tuesday night.

Derek Lamont Moore, 33, is facing multiple charges including aggravated assault, assault of a law enforcement officer, disarming a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

Allegheny County 911 confirmed to Channel 11 that police and EMS crews were called to the area of 6th and Margaretta streets at 9:08 p.m.

The car involved was a marked police car. Investigators said the incident began with reports of a fight.

“The fight stemmed off of an address on Baldridge Avenue. The male fled the scene. Our officers were in pursuit to locate the suspect,” said Chief Isaac Daniele of the North Braddock Police Department.

Officers responded to the area and the suspect fled. The officers encountered the suspect in pursuit.

“Suspect somehow got into the passenger side of the police car and carjacked the officer that was driving, pushed her out of the car, and then attempted to run them over,” said Daniele.

Two officers fired at the police cruiser to try to get the suspect to slow down. Police said between four and six rounds were fired during the incident.

When another officer from North Braddock answered the call for back-up, investigators say, Moore, who was still inside the police cruiser, attacked that officer with a police radio, shattering his glasses, and then tried to steal his gun. The officer went to the hospital with injuries to his face, likely including a broken nose, according to hospital staff mentioned in court documents.

The officer who was pushed out of the car was not injured.

Community members couldn’t believe what happened.

“The world is crazy, you know? People need help. People are sick,” said Sharron Mitchell of North Braddock.
