100 gallons of oil spilled at busy Route 8 intersection

PITTSBURGH — A busy intersection north of Pittsburgh was restricted for most of Tuesday afternoon after a truck tipped over and caused an oil spill.

A truck that was towing an oil truck on a flatbed trailer was turning the corner from Route 8 onto Harts Run Road in Hampton Township when the oil truck tipped over.

Firefighters estimated that 100 gallons of oil spilled onto the road.

“I was sitting by the window, having a coffee while on the computer, when I heard a big bang,” witness Dave Tumpa said.

One lane of traffic in each direction was getting by, but the incident was causing significant delays and intermittent closures. As of 3:30 p.m., traffic was moving smoothly in the area, but officials were still not letting people down onto Route 8 from Harts Run Road.

“What we did is we used Oil-Dri to dyke it off, so that it can't spread any further. We're keeping it out of the streams,” North Hampton Fire Department firefighter Dave Hoburg said.

An environmental cleanup company was being brought in to contain the spill. There was no estimate on how long the cleanup would take to complete.

No one was hurt.
