2 baby girls 1st to be born in Pittsburgh in 2015

PITTSBURGH — Some people rang in the New Year by singing “Auld Lang Syne,” but for the families of two new baby girls, the song of the day was “Happy Birthday.”

Martecka was the first baby born in Pittsburgh in 2015.

“When I came out, they were all clapping – like, ‘You got the first baby of 2015,’” said Martecka’s mother, Montecka.

Martecka was born at 1:15 a.m. Thursday at Magee Women’s Hospital in Oakland.

“She was a big baby,” said Montecka.

The baby weighs 8 pounds, 5 ounces and is 19 inches long.

Martecka will go home to two big sisters and a big brother.

“They’re happy. They can’t wait to see her,” said Montecka.

Just a few miles away at West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield, Veronica Rae was the first to be born in 2015.

“We had talked about it a lot that she would be the first baby, but we never thought it would happen,” said Veronica Rae’s mother, Colleen Elliott.

At 6 pounds, 4 ounces and 20 inches long, Veronica Rae joined the world at 6:25 a.m.

She arrived a few days after Elliott’s due date and a few hours later than Dad was hoping.

“I figured it would be 12:01. I missed the tax break,” Nick Elliott said.

Veronica Rae is the couple’s first child.
