UNIONTOWN, Pa. — Two Fayette County corrections officers accused of beating an inmate are now facing criminal charges.
The assault on inmate Robert Stimmel during intake processing took place 20 days ago, after he was arrested for failing to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge. In the days after the attack, he was diagnosed with multiple broken ribs, a brain bleed, a traumatic brain injury, a concussion and permanent vision problems.
Channel 11 just obtained court documents for Ryan Sigley and Amadeus Marinucci, the corrections officers accused in the attack. They’re both charged with aggravated assault, official oppression, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and unsworn falsification to authorities.
“It is completely unnecessary what happened to Mr. Stimmel and as much as we support the guards and support the work that they do and all law enforcement, wrong is wrong and that’s why we filed the charges that we did today,” Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele said.
He emphasized that correctional facilities are not intended for retaliation.
“These guards are trained to deal with violent people, combative people, rude people and their job is tough,” Aubele said. “It’s sometimes thankless, but this is not a place for retribution. This is not a place to settle scores.”
Sigley and Marinucci were fired nearly two weeks after the attack. A third officer, Kris Upole, accused in the incident, was suspended for 10 days. He was not charged.
“The statements of the victim in this case did not support the charges against the third officer,” Aubele said. “He wasn’t even aware that he was in the area.”
Sigley and Marinucci were permitted to bond out without paying money.
Stimmel’s attorney has also filed a civil lawsuit against Fayette County and three officers.
The lawsuit alleges Stimmel had previously filed grievances concerning excessive force prior to the beating without the officers receiving discipline or reprimands. It also claims the county is at fault for maintaining a search area known to lack camera coverage without a proper supervisor present.
