Man to be charged with sexual assault after he, woman were shot in Mount Oliver

MT. OLIVER, Pa. — Two people were shot in Mount Oliver overnight during a sexual assault.

According to Allegheny County police, officers were notified of a woman in distress in Ormsby Park at around 12:59 a.m.

Responding officers heard a woman screaming from inside of a car. When they approached, they heard two gunshots go off from inside.

According to police, one of the officers fired three times toward the car, hitting the tire and a vehicle parked behind it.

The officers ordered the people inside of the car, a 21-year-old woman and 22-year-old man, to get out.

Officers discovered both had been shot, the woman in the leg and the man in the arm.

According to Allegheny County police, detectives learned that a sexual assault was happening in the car when a struggle with a firearm began. The gun fired twice and hit the man and woman.

Police said there was no indication the shots from the officer hit either of them.

The man was identified as Maurice Ruffin. He will be charged with rape, sexual assault, unlawful restraint, aggravated assault, receiving stolen property (firearm) and simple assault, according to police.

Police said both were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
