AMBRIDGE, Pa. — Ambridge police called to a fight Friday ended up making a major drug bust after noticing a man trying to leave the scene with an awkwardly heavy backpack.
Police said officers were called to an Ambridge apartment for a domestic dispute when they saw the suspect walking down the sidewalk with a backpack. Officers stopped him and asked to look inside the backpack.
More than $117,000, a 9 mm loaded Glock, a money counter and a digital scale were inside the backpack, police said.
Ambridge police told Channel 11 that they believe they took a big-time drug dealer off their local streets.
Channel 11 learned that the suspect, Durrel Fortson, is on federal probation and on house arrest, wearing an ankle bracelet for a charge of distribution of cocaine.
Ambridge police are working jointly on this case with the attorney general's organized crime unit and Region 6 narcotics unit.
Fortson is now behind bars on drug charges.
