Army Ranger, platoon mates honored at Memorial Day weekend Pirates games

PITTSBURGH — A former Army Ranger and four of his former platoon mates were invited by the Pirates' owner to a pair of games over Memorial Day weekend.

"Memorial Day is a day for civilians and veterans alike to bridge that gap between us and reflect on those we've lost," said former Army Ranger and Westmoreland County native Sean Parnell.

Pirates owner Bob Nutting asked Parnell to throw the ceremonial first pitch at Friday night's game.

Nutting invited Parnell and his former platoon mates to attend Sunday night's game in a luxury suite, as well.

Parnell wrote the best-selling novel, "Outlaw Platoon," about his experiences in Afghanistan and will be holding a Memorial Day reunion for about 15 platoon members.
