Arnold neighbors frustrated with cars speeding, crashing into homes

ARNOLD, Pa. — Neighbors are calling for changes after a car hit a home on an Arnold street for the third time in less than one year.

"Every time you hear a car or a crash, you think, ‘Somebody's hurt. Somebody's dead,’” said resident Alicia Phillips.

Her porch was the latest to be a hit by a car coming down Murray Avenue. It was the third time in less than a year that a vehicle struck a home along Leishman Avenue.

Video obtained only by Channel 11 News shows an out-of-control car crashing into two homes on Leishman Avenue last month.

The same thing happened nearly a year ago when a car came down Murray Avenue and torpedoed through a home.

Arnold officials told Channel 11 Monday that they’re exploring the possibility of buying out the homes at the bottom of the Murray Avenue hill.

"I think it's irresponsible spending, and they're giving us information to shut us up,” said Phillips.

Arnold Mayor Larry Milito said he understands the frustration.

"This hill has been here forever. We're not going to move it, but we can move the houses,” he said.

Milito explained that barricades would be out of the question because the city’s liabilities would increase.

The suggestion of making the road on the hill one-way heading up also isn’t doable and would only create new problems, Milito said.

“I do care about those houses at the bottom of the hill, but what the people need to remember (is) I didn't build those houses there, nor did I stand in the front yard and say, ‘You should buy this one,’” said Milito.

Phillips said she doesn’t believe that buying her out and tearing down her home is the right solution to the problem.

“You have good people who take care of their properties, believe in the community, and to send them away would be a mistake,” she said.
