ATI employees postpone Brackenridge rally

PITTSBURGH — A rally planned for Friday in Brackenridge has been postponed, as a standoff between union steelworkers and a local company continues.

United Steel Workers members and activists had planned to rally with locked out Allegheny Technologies, Inc. workers.

Channel 11's Steven Fisher has learned the Brackenridge rallies will be moved to another date.

Other rallies were held in Midland, Bagdad, Vandergrift, Washington and Latrobe.

The lockout affecting roughly 2,200 workers began Aug. 15. The workers' last contract expired June 30.

A key issue is the company's demand that workers begin paying some of their health insurance premiums.

Industry analysts say that's a precursor to a tax on employee health plans that's set to take effect in 2018 under the federal health care overhaul.

Workers say the company did not give them appropriate time to discuss and vote on new contracts.

The company says the union workers are paid some of the highest wages in the country and are only asked to pay half the national average for health care.

ATI has been using non-union workers.

The Associated Press contirbuted to this report.
