Brookline parents express concerns over proposed rehab facility near school

PITTSBURGH — A dozen families have pulled their children out of a catholic school after learning about plans to build a drug and alcohol rehab center about 100 feet away.

“There’s no way of accounting for who’s coming to visit these people, whether it will be a 24 hours open facility. Who’s coming in? Where are they coming from?” said Chanel Wissner, a parent of two children who attend St. John Bosco Academy.

Dozens of parents went to the Pittsburgh zoning board meeting Thursday to express their concerns to members of the board and Dr. Arif Rafi, the man who owns the property.

Rafi said they will have staff members at the center, but he will not be able to get a guard.

He also said that the patients will not come from the criminal justice system, and there will only be eight to 10 residents at a time.

The principal of the school said that more families will leave the school if the clinic is approved.

The zoning board took the information and testimony into evidence at the meeting and plan to discuss it further before making a final decision.

The decision is expected to be made within several weeks.
