Monroeville Mall shooting suspect's case delayed after push to move to juvenile court

PITTSBURGH — The case against the teenager accused of opening fire inside the Monroeville Mall, injuring three people in February 2015, has been delayed.

Tarod Thornhill is charged as an adult for the shooting, which happened inside the mall’s Macy’s department store. But the defense wanted the case moved to juvenile court.

In an attempt to get Thornhill tried as a juvenile, an expert was called to the stand by the defense during Friday's hearing.

The expert evaluated Thornhill and determined that he has multiple psychological illnesses, including bipolar disorder, and recommended that he receive treatment instead of jail time. During her testimony on Friday, she said Thornhill describes the moments leading up to the shooting as a blur.

During the hearing, the prosecution played part of a conversation that Thornhill had with two people telling him to alter his behavior.

"Tarod, listen to me and listen to me well. When that Doctor comes to see you sometime this week, you better act nuttier than a fruitcake. You understand," a woman was heard saying on a sound clip played by prosecutors.

The case was delayed for a few weeks while Thornhill’s attorney looks at juvenile court records that accuse his client of a robbery at Kennywood five years ago.
