PITTSBURGH — The operator of an EMS wheelchair van narrowly avoided injury Wednesday morning when the vehicle under which he was changing a flat tire was struck by a dump truck.
The van became disabled around the 82 mile marker of Interstate 376 westbound, according to state police. A second EMS van stopped to assist. The operator was partially under the van attempting to change the flat tire when both vans were struck around 6:25 a.m. The operator of the dump truck pulled over a short time later, according to a social media post by Penn Hills Volunteer No. 7 Fire Co.
The right lane was temporarily blocked as crews worked to clear the scene. There were no reported injuries. A passenger of the wheelchair van was transported to a hospital by another ambulance for evaluation. State police are investigating.
