Ex-South Allegheny teacher accused of sexual contact with students gets no jail time

ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — A former South Allegheny Middle School teacher accused of having sexual contact with two teenage students will not serve any jail time after pleading no contest in court Monday.

While Cole McLaughlin will not serve any jail time, he will have to register as a sex offender and serve five years’ probation.

Parents with children in the South Allegheny School District told Channel 11 News that they were more than disappointed.

"As the stepfather of a little girl in the district, that's unacceptable,” parent Josh Schmidt said.

A former social studies teacher and assistant soccer coach, McLaughlin negotiated a plea deal that requires him to register as a sex offender for the next 25 years but doesn’t include time behind bars.

As part of the deal, McLaughlin admitted to sexting, fondling and French kissing a 12-year-old at school along with groping and sending nude photos to a 17-year-old.

"In any case involving the sexual assault of a child, the welfare of the victim is paramount. By resolving these two cases with the negotiated plea, we have spared the two victims of having to relive the emotional and physical trauma they suffered at the hands of this defendant,” the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement to Channel 11 News.

As part of the sexual offender probation, McLaughlin will undergo mental health treatment and he is not allowed to use the Internet.
