Family thankful for support as community honors mother killed in murder-suicide with vigil

PITTSBURGH — A community came together to support four children who lost their mother in a murder-suicide, and that family said all of that support was an important and welcome surprise.

A sea of balloons was released into the air on Monday in Shaelynn Moore’s memory.

“Her favorite color was pink and purple. She always took pictures of us,” Lasha Moore, one of her daughters, said.

Dozens of people showed up for Moore’s family at a vigil in Pittsburgh’s Sheraden neighborhood on Monday.

She was killed last week in an apparent murder-suicide at an apartment in Northview Heights.

Police found Moore and Mark Jones dead. They say three of Moore’s four kids were in the apartment at the time.

Moore’s mother, Tammy Martin, said Jones shot her daughter before turning the gun on himself.

“She wasn’t dating this man. He was obsessed with her,” Martin said.

Moore’s family said Jones had pulled a gun on her several times in the past and that she had contacted his family for help.

“She’s my only baby girl. I’m going to miss her,” Martin said.

Moore’s daughter was surprised and happy to see so much support for her family and had this message about what it meant to her.

“So everybody that lost somebody…ya’ll know you got support from people-loving people,” Lasha Moore said.

A GoFundMe has been set up for the family.
