Giant Eagle exec says company would consider opening store downtown

PITTSBURGH — People who live or work in downtown Pittsburgh are in agreement that the area needs a grocery store.

According to Channel 11's news exchange partners at TribLIVE, a Giant Eagle executive said the company would consider putting a store downtown, but nothing is planned as of now.

“There’s nowhere downtown to really go to get food or anything. You have a lot of people living in town now,” Linda Hughes said. “So many people catch the bus downtown, and everybody could just run in and grab what they needed and get back on their bus to go to their destination.”

A Giant Eagle executive told TribLIVE if the population count warrants it, the company could be interested in putting a store in downtown Pittsburgh.

“The Hill District just got a grocery store that they needed. Downtown needs one, they’re overdue,” Janet Winbush said.
