Heavy rains cause flash flooding throughout region

Strong thunderstorms rolled through much of the Channel 11 viewing area Sunday, producing pounding rains that caused flooding in several places.
WPXI meteorologist Mike LaPoint said the storm system dumped one and a-half inches of rain.
Flooding was reported in the Pittsburgh neighborhoods of Greenfield, Carnegie and on Route 51.
In the South Side, emergency dispatchers said several people driving near the Hot Metal Bridge near Second Avenue were trapped. No injuries were reported.

PITTSBURGH — In Oakdale, Mohoney Road was shut down after flooding left behind a big mess on the roadway.


A Port Authority bus and an unknown amount of passengers got caught in flood waters on Idlewood Avenue in East Carnegie, emergency crews reported.

According to the National Weather Service, severe thunderstorms were triggered after a cold front and warm air mass combined over the Mid-Atlantic states which includes Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Maryland.
