Here’s how Pittsburgh companies ranked on the American Opportunity Index

This year, Harvard Business School’s Managing the Future of Work Project, along with The Burning Glass Institute and the Shultz Family Foundation, launched the first-ever American Opportunity Index.

The index serves as a scorecard for large companies, ranking them on how well they create economic mobility and opportunities for their employees.

For Pittsburgh-based companies, two made the top 50 list.

Wesco International Inc. came in at spot No. 12, with a weighted score of 3.80. According to the index, Wesco (NYSE: WCC) qualifies as providing employees with a career launchpad, career growth and advancement without a degree. Wesco scored the highest out of the 12 companies in the “wholesale and distribution” category.

Also scoring within the top 50 was PPG Industries Inc. at No. 44, with a weighted score of 3.44. The index qualified PPG (NYSE: PPG) as providing its employees with a career launchpad and career growth. It landed at No. 4 in the “materials and chemicals manufacturing” category.
